Episode 1

In September, 2011, the biggest dam removal project in US history began on Washington's Elwha River. In Episode 1 of his "Year of the River" project, filmmaker Andy Maser celebrates both the human and natural importance of this landmark event.

 
 

In 2011, the United States reached an important and exciting milestone – the removal of over 1,000 dams nationwide.

In the Pacific Northwest, major dam removal projects on Washington's Elwha and White Salmon rivers have become the capstones of the river conservation movement. In Year of the River, NRS Ambassador Andy Maser – a kayaker, filmmaker, world explorer and environmental advocate – turns his lens on this historic occasion. The result is a beautiful and hopeful tribute to free-flowing water and the people for whom it means everything.
