“The rocks that we see that create the rapids were created with Pangea, like, we’re paddling the history of the Earth.”

Among America’s oldest major cities, Richmond, Virginia is home to the James River. The James flows through the ancestral lands of the Powhatan Confederacy, a fact that stand-up paddler and Richmond local Rosa Roncales makes a point not to forget.

“It’s incredible to think while I’m paddling in modern times with our great technology and our PFDs and fancy paddleboards, that so many generations and thousands and thousands of years ago… people paddled this river, fished in it, navigated these waters, way before I was ever here.”
